Question: what kind of oil does a 2004 jetta wagon take

what kind of oil?

Mine takes synthetic, but, that is because it's the 1.8T (turbo). Better check with your manual or service person to be sure.

P.S. I've also used synthetic and partial synthetic oils on older cars and it works like a dream. More expensive but the cars all made it past 300,000 miles.
